i got my first project bike about six months ago. i put in a new piston, rings, wrist pin and circlips. before i put it back together i got a valve job done too. i then started it up to find it wouldnt rev up with out dying. i tore the carb apart and cleaned it 4 different times making sure all the jet are clean then put it back togehter as it said to in the in the repair guide. the adjusted the needle jet to make it richer. it runs better but still spits and sputters when reved med. if i pull the choke it runs fine. please help. im about to go nuts. please help me keep my sanity

 

I think the Rancher has a power/RPM limiter in reverse.

If it runs better with the choke on, I think you've still got the idle passage gummed up, or you may have an air leak between the head and carb.

 

Water and oil might have mixed already in your engine. Better check your gasket

 

Thanks JeffinTD I checked and it was an air leak. Now it runs like a champ.

I've had some bum luck with Handa (Keihn) catrbs -especially on the Rancher ('04) where after a very careful rebuild the float bowl vent finally stopped pissing witht he petcock left on and the engine not running - only to start dripping again and now it's stopped dripping again?!?!?!?!

 

Same deal with my 01 rancher it pisses gas it doesnt **** gas... make up my mind you douche!!
