300 4x4 clutch adj. nut?
#1
Hi all, i wrote about this several weeks ago. But here is what i need to know.
I have a 1999 300 4x4.
I set the clutch adjustment nut, but I'm not sure if its messed up or not.
This quad has less than 20 hrs on it....so it is barley broken in and has
little use on it. Just as the manual states " loosen locking nut, then turn
the adjuster (with screw driver) to 1/4 turn from end position. When i go to
tighten up the outside locking nut around the threaded adjustment shaft, the
center shaft turns as well too. Is is supposed to do this? I take a socket head
and a screwdriver at same time......so i can hold the center adjustment shaft in
the position i set it in.....thus turning the outside locking nut...and i cant seem
to get it tight enough to hold.
So basically, if i follow the manual.....set the center shaft...1/4 turn out...then
tighten the outside nut.......the center shaft starts to turn with the nut and moves a few revolutions.......when i back off the outside nut, it takes about 2 or 3 full revolutions. is this too far? am i actually backing out the center shaft off something
in the inside of the case? That is what it feels like. I cant seem to keep the threaded center shaft from moving around after i set it with a screw driver.
I would appreciate hearing from any 300 4x4 owners or anyone whom has ever had experience
in setting this adjustment.........
thanks

Loosen locknut[forget about the center shaft right now]
Turn the center shaft COUNTER CLOCKWISE until resistance is felt, then turn clockwise 1/4 turn.
Take a screwdriver and hold the center shaft while tightening the nut with a WRENCH.
There should be no way possible for the center to turn with the nut when doing this. I haven't seen one that has anyway. I find it odd that something could be wrong ,...Especially one with only 20hrs on the clutch.
You are adjusting the clutch by going counter clockwise aren't you??
