Not to start a R/EX war, but the R is faster off the line and has a wild powerband. The R also handles better and turns more precise. The R will out carve the EX . I'm not saying this is better, just a difference. The R don't have the luxury of the EX. It vibs, kickstarts and tends to scare you once in a while when the powerband kicks in.

The EX should have been called the 400R LX Edition.

One thing about the speed comparism. The external gearing of the 2 quads is totally different (400ex-38/15 and 250r-38/13) with the internal gearing being relitavely close. Change the gearing on the 400ex to match the "R" and that holeshot may go away and maybe the top end will change a bit too considering that the 400ex just plains out (will not pull as many RPM's) with the tall stock gearing.

Gary C I can't argue with you there. I've seen that done on a Warrior and a Realter racing tire/wheel package added. It to gained speed all the way through bottom to top. A shorter stance would also help the EX. With that combo even a less skilled rider may be able to beat the R due to the smooth power band of the EX.

The 250R has the supierior power advantage even stock vs stock. The 400 is a awsome trail machine and probably a good MXer but in the sand pit or drag race the 250R is the king. The 400 has more suspension travel than the 250 which makes it a smoother ride. 4 strokes are more reliable but if you want some radical acellaration than get the 250 The 250 is cheaper to modify than the 400.

If you were to change the external gearing on a 400 to match that of a 250R you would be in seriuos trouble since the 400 is only a 5 speed and the 250R a six speed.

I have an 86 250r and my mom (gag) has a 2000 400EX. The 250r always starts in cold wheather, is more fun on a MX track and there is definately some value in owning the best quad ever made. The four stroke is real nice in the woods though.

I have an 86 trx 250r and my cousoin has a 99 400ex in the wooods I beat him and on the drag stripo I beat him and he has the same gearing as my 250r 14 tooth counter shaft sproket and 38 rear sproket he also has a dynojet kit and K&n filter when my 250r was completly stock I could beat him on black top I feel the 400ex has a lot going for it though
