Recon Valve Adjustment
#1
Is there an easier way to adjust the valves on a 03 recon es? The service manual talks about taking everthing off on the front end. Has anyone tried any other way. I can't believe my dealer does the first inspection for only $60.00 and he has to go to all that trouble to adjust the valves. There must be a flatrate way to do this and only charge 60.00. Any suggestions or insights would be great. Also where do you purchase the valve adjustment tool. Is it a Honda dealer only tool?
Thanks

You have to take everything off in order to get to the valve caps. It's a pain the butt I know but it has to be done. After a few times of doing it it's not really to bad though. You can use a small pair of pliers instead of buying a special tool.
Hope this helps,

rideredinvt, To access the valves you do not need to remove the front racks or fenders! Leave them on! Just remove the side covers and gas tank(it is a tight fit, but by a little wiggling and fussin' you CAN get it out). Use a feeler gage to set the valves. You can buy it at any auto parts store. The feeler gage should be a snug fit,not real tight.

gergb,
Don't forget the new Recons (2001 on up) have a diferent style head on them, like a a 250EX. Instead of one cover over the valves there are two, one towards the front, the other toward the back.

moto93, I just looked at a microfishe at a 2001 Recon and it only has one valve cover. Maybe 2002 and up are a little different, but, you should still be able to access the entire top of the cylinder head as none of it is under the front rack or front fenders!
Peltrax, I believe the owners manual suggest the first adjustment at 20 hours, and every 100 hours after that. I just check mine every year before the first big ride. (usually no adjustment needed)
