Turkey Call
#4
Missed one from 40 yards with a bow...don't know how that happened. We don't use calls out here for them, we kind of spot and stalk like you would an elk. I will on occasion us a hawk scream to hold them.

I would love to hunt them with a bow. I dont have a bow yet so I got a while. Someday anyway. What you said about not calling them in, We normally call them in(spring gobbler anyway). Thats the biggest rush you will ever have is to hear a gobbler responding to your call and closing the distance. Then again I am a turkey freak, Ginnis can tell you that lol.

yeah, the kid (he's actually older than me) is a freak when it comes to spring gobbler. how big do those Merriams get? i was reading field and stream, and a guy said something about not liking to hunt them, but i'd never heard of them before.

They are different. I'd say a good sized gobbler gets to about 20-25lbs, but those are pretty rare. Most of what you see, expecially during the fall hunt are smaller 15-20lb birds. It's deffinatley a different type of hunt in the fall...well, in the spring too, but I only do archery during the fall. Any shotgun hunt for turkey here is on a draw, and it's a pretty tough draw too. Archery tag is OTC and at the same time as the archery mule deer in the region we hunt, so that works out nice.
I'd love to do a more traditional turkey hunt. Can't imagine the feeling of watching and hearing a big gobbler coming down the path responding to your call...
I don't now what kind of gun you use, but originally when I got into birding I thought I'd like to eventually try turkey, so I wound up getting a Mossberg 835 as my bird gun. Very versatile for everything from dove and quail to duck and geese to turkey. Reasonable price too. So, if I ever got the chance, I'd be ready.
Did I mention, I have some friends just north of Pittsburg (Harmony)....LOL...

I use a Winchester 1300 speed pump. I have Turkey Taker sights on it, and a Carlson extended and ported turkey choke. I also use Winchester Supreme 1 3/4 oz. 6 shot 3 inch mags. Its not the fanciest gun in the world, but it sure gets the job done.
