Clearing a plot and planting food for Deer
 

Hello all,

I live up in NH. Got 32 acres but it's all really thick woods. thinking about clearing a little bit and planting some food for the deer. Any ideas of what a good size plot would be and what kind of food I could grow? I saw the other threads on this but they don't really cover the terrain/geography of the area they are planting in.

If you don't have a tractor to plow I wouldn't recommend making it too big. It's hard enough cutting the trees down, cleaning up the mess, and cutting all the brush back. I'm not sure how well one of those drag behind tillers will do in the rocky ground here without first digging the rocks out. You can go around stumps but rocks... Not so easily here.

At my place, I guess I'd plant hostas...they eat the darned hostas in my garden down to the ground.
But, more deer mean more blood sucking ticks up in the northeast.

I'm thinking something along the lines of 50 yards longs, 20 yards wide, then having the outter edges have two trails maybe 100 yards long maybe 3 yards wide bottle necking down to another plot 10 yards by 20 yards where I'll have a tree stand facing the plot and the ends of both trails for my kill plot. I figure those dimensions should give me plenty of room to plant some bedding in betw

Plant your food plot long and narrow. Deer are edge dwellers and rarely venture far from the edge of the food plot.
Plant it where you can take advantage of the wind no matter what direction its coming from.
You can waste all of your money on cover scents, etc, but you will NEVER defeat the nose of a deer with any of that garbage.
Hunt the wind.
