anybody have strobes?

I bought one of thoose automotive strobe light kits for my headlight housings. Hoping to help the morons speeding down the highway I sometimes have to follow to see me, in the ditch of course, chasing loose farm critters........ It has a variable speed controller I guess I will mount in my front storage box, probably not waterproof. Just wondering if anybody else ever did this, and if you had any tips to make it work better, like where in the housing to mount the bulbs. Thanks.

P.S. Theese will also be fun on our night rides and camping trips.........

Those little strobes are not very bright. If you have your headlights on, you'll never notice them. W/the lights off, it will light up the housing but probably won't project light. If you want bright strobes you'll need to go with actual strobe tubes and a controller similar to what's used on police cars. Those are noticeable.

If they arent bright, I wont waste my time drilling them into the housings. Worth the cash to find out. I dont think these draw that much. Thanks for the replies.

ya, those are the same style I bought and mounted on one of my motorcycles. They will probably be a little brighter mounted in the smaller housing out headlights are as opposed to the big headlight on the bike. You'll still have to turn the headlights off to really see them. You only need about a 3/8" hole to mount them if I remember correctly.

AJ,
I've toyed with the idea as well, as far as using the strobes, but the cost is real high, I'd have to have 4 of them, (in amber), mount 2 to the rear in clear back up type lenses., I've also thought about turn signals as well. I ended up with a floor plate for 1/2" galvanizwed pipe mounted to the rear rack, and a 30" rised, another floor plate, and a metal receptacle cover, I have a yellow strobe on a magnetic mount that goes on this, that plugs in the rear electric outlet. It works pretty well, but the strobe was about 90 bux... I can only use yellow or amber, due to state regs. if you have any ideas that would work as far as for amber/yellow strobes, and turn signals that are not cost prohibitive, let me know.. I've looked at the wheelen site, and maybe there is something there.. I want them to be BRIGHT... these should work, but at 230 for the kit, 80 for amber, and 100 for the switch, it is more than I want to spend..strobe kit

Surveyor: As long as you don't mind buying stuff just to tear it apart, you should be able to put together a 4 strobe kit for about $40. Outdoor shops sell emergency strobes, little hand held units that flash a xenon tube and runs off of AA batteries and cost about $10 each. Pull the housings apart and do a little creative wiring to a 2 way momentary switch and you'll be off and running.

I bought a pair of clear tubes to mount in my corner lights, but never got around to buying the controller/amplifier. Just as well, had a new car 6 months later. They are definitely BRIGHT! But I think they'll pull some juice. Ok for short term, but might be a problem on a hour long ride. If anyone wants the tubes, I'll see if I can find them in the basement $10ea + shipping.
