S. Dakota
#1
There was once a number of people going on a fun run to S. Dakota just want to see if these people are still going or not. PW has had a family emergency so there is one out anyone else going. If there is not that many then I to will bow out. At one time DG was going, PW, Oldmanwheeler ( not sure, maybe), Mnfriesn I thought might go. Excuse me if I did not get the spelling right Freeze. I am just wondering if anyone will show up, I have not been there before so this would be my first time there. If anybody can describe the type of riding there please inform me and the rest who have been there thanks for the details.

Went there two yrs. ago....really nice riding
Lots of rock...temps in the 90 degree range during the day to 50s at night
Alt is anywhere from 4000 to 7000
Trails are very clearly marked...nice scenery
You guys might wanna call the US forest service a few days before ya go
Sometimes they close down the trails to ALL motorized vehicles because of the risk of fire
I dont think I can make it out this year, but I wish you guys good luck and safe riding

I have heard it is a good place to ride lots of scenery. Oldmanwheeler, PW, and DG told me about the run they were going to try to go to this year at the last week of July.
Kawakasi, thanks for the heads up about the forest fire situation that would be a disapointment to travel all that way to be kept out due to forest fires.
BabyMoose, Dosthoff, I gather it is very close to Sturgess only a couple of miles from town where everyone would be camping. It is as far as I know dry camping so a tent will work but will be rather hot I would think. For me it is around a 20 drive so I will keep the fire service number near me.
Friesen, yes school is rather important there is always next time. Not sure If I can still go??

It's a great place to ride with lots of scenery. You could ride for a week straight and not cover all the trails. There is a lot of snowmobile trails that are clearly marked, you can get a map at most trail heads. Also there is a place east of Rapid City about 30 minutes called Farmingdale, there is over 2,000 acres of riding area. The terrain is all badlands (lots of hills and trails) make sure you use a GPS if you can it's real easy to get lost out there. Good Luck

Farmingdale is an excellent place to ride. You may want to get there in the morning and do your riding before it gets busy. I have been there once and have riden in the black hills a couple of times. If you guys are going e-mail me as I would like to meet you out there and do a little riding. I am about 5 hours from the hills and would be willing to check out the fire danger before heading out.
