Won't fire
 

I have a 1996 Kawasaki 300. I paid a local dealer @$1,500. six months ago to repair the electrical system because it would not start. Now it won't start again. I can manually cross the starter connections and get it to turn over but it won't fire. The start button does nothing. I don't want to pay the sorry dealer another dime. Does anyone have a suggestion.

It may be a Bayou although it does not say that anywhere. It only has 4 X 4 300. The model # on the dealer work order is KLF300-C8. Thanks for the reply.

Yes that is a bayou. Pull the plug. Turn the bike on. lay the plug up against the engine with the coil wire on it. be sure that the metal portion ( the nut ) is up against the metal of the engine, but not the electrode ( the tang at the end of the plug ). Pull the engine thru with the pull start. You should be able to see a spark. If not, you probaly have a bad coil or brain. what did the stealer replace for 1500? get back to me after you have tried what i told you and we'll go from there.

I got it!!! Did as you suggested with the plug and got a spark. Checked the fuel at carb and it was OK. Air intake was good. So I had fuel, fire and air. After checking all that it still wouldn't fire so I was at a loss. Decided to clean the battery terminals and refill with water then email you. When I disconnected positive lead the dealer repaired wire going to the starter relay felt funny so I checked further and sure enough there was a break in it at a coupling. Fixed that and it turned over first try. Screw the dealers, I'm going to learn to do this stuff myself. Your willingness to help kept me from giving up. Thank you.

You are very welcome. This stuff aint rocket science, its all really simple if you can follow some simple instructions. Simple tool set you get at wal mart or home depot will let you do most everything you will need to do on your ATV to keep it goin. Some things can be tricky, but follow this simple rule and you can usually figure it out with out too much headache: Start with the simple stuff, its usually whats wrong. Buy a manual - even if its a cheap one. They have fairly usable troubleshooting charts in them. Good luck and now go have some fun on your quad!
