Bayou 300 shifting
 

Hi guys,
I am new to the ATV scene and just bought my first machine. Its a 1998 Bayou 300 4X4. I bought it at an estate sale for a steal 600 bones. It runs great and is in good condition, but I do have a problem with shifting. It shifts hard and sometimes you can actually hear the gears when shifting. Its most noticable when I accelerate hard and let off the throttle to shift up. Its also very noticable when down shifting and when I'm decending a hill using the engines compression. There have been a couple times when it has actully bound up and I had to reach down with my hand and pull it out of gear cause I couldn't shift it out with my foot. Does this sound like some type of adjustment I can make on the clutches or should I take it to a shop? Oh and I have a freind that has a Lakota Sport and it shifts much more smoothly then mine.

usually when my eiger does this i have to either give it some gas and then try to shift again or i gotta put on the brakes to take the load off of the gears....if that don't help i'd take it in

You Should Try changing the oil because i know my bike did a similar thing but just to go to second and changin the oil fixed the problem

I did a maintenance on it which included changing the oil and it seemed to help some but didn't cure the problem. BTW when I changed the oil I used Mobil 1 which I was told was OK, but then I was told to use only oil that is designed for ATV's since the gear box uses the same oil as the motor and automotive oil wasn't designed for that use. So I changed it again using ATV specific stuff. When I first changed it the oil was really dirty and then I was informed that the guy who owned it had been using 2 cycle oil cause he thought it was a 2 stroke. Is there anything I can run in the oil for a while that may help clean things up a bit. Maybe some Seafoam or how bout some Lucas (Hi-Tach)?
