It tightens automatically. If yours is lose, your chain is way stretched (or your tensioner is not working right). On older engines I think you have to lossen the bolt and let the spring push the tensioner out and then tighten the bolt. The 220 has a one-way clutch inside the lets the tensioner come out, but not go back in.
