1986 bayou wont start
I just had the quad out the other night infact it does this all the time hard to start cold - it's got no pull start just electric normally I can get it fired with a little spray of carb clearner but this time I have attempted that, changed the spark plug, checked the spark lots there,. removed and emptied the carb, ensured fuel is flowing - just turns and turn and turns never fires nor does it even burp in an attempt to fire... any ideas, anything you would try

go buy a cylinder compression gauge at o'reillys or autozone or advance or wherever you shop. pull the spark plug and stick it in the place where the spark plug was, the gauge will have threads or a rubber tip, then crank it. watch the gauge. see what it says and then we'll go from there.

I agree with adjusting the valves. I was having the same problem with mine when I first started driving it and the problem was the intake valve was way too tight. I've had to readjust them frequently since because they keep tightening up.
Here's the link I followed.

this problem looks like it's already been solved. but, i just want to back-up the beliefs on the intake valve being the problem. if the sparks there and fuel is flowing, it's gotta be the intake valve. any spark + any fuel would at least make it fire, which it's not even close to doing according to the OP. So the problem has to be before the combustion chamber, aka intake valve.

can someone tell me I had a look at the valves yesterday night by taking off the inspection covers got access side covers to manually crank it - as the link above suggest crank counter clockwise until the valve made 1 cycle and then keep turning till a "T" is in the view - got all this seen the "T"
now my question is I don't have feeler gauge so I'm going tonight to get one but can anyone show me pics on where I shove this thing??? and what I tighting? little confused on where and what I'm measuring
also when you have access to the chain that connects (timing chain?) should there be any play in that chain I have slight play..
I can get the bike running but every time it's cold like overnight takes like 20mins of ******* around with it to get it going - remove carb - clean it, spray some ether in the intake, move the bike around, just seems like it's not hitting a good compression stroke???
