86 Bayou 300 in a stuck situation

It sounds like these things are a pain in the a$$ when unable to get spark.
I am at a total loss and really would like some help.
Heres what happened.
I purchased this quad in good running condition.
I brought it home. Pulled the plastics all off and got to cleaning the many many years of mud and gunk off.
I did use a pressure washer to get the bigger gunk.
When I put it all back together, all I got was backfiring. That happened 3 or 4 times and now I get nothing. No spark no nothing.
I replaced the coil and still nothing.
I am not very good with these electrically. What do I do? What can I test?
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
CDI?
Rectifier?
Stator?
Anything else??
I am at a loss and ripping my hair out because of it.

Thanks all

I just went and turned it over real quick. And it fired for a 1/2 a second. Then checked the spark and nothing.
It had to have some or it wouldn't fire.
What do I have going on?

Let it dry out properly. The KLF300 has the same DC ignition system as a non fuel injection car from the 1980s. A trigger coil on the outside of the flywheel provides timing. The power for the coil and "igniter" is provided by the battery via the ignition switch, not direct from the stator like AC systems. You are far more likely to have disturbed a wire when removing plastics or cleaning, than to have had component failure.

Thank you very much for replying.
Ive checked all the wires, cleaned up some terminals.
Still get no spark.
It used to fire up immediately
I don't want to just keep buying new parts to find out that was not the problem.
Especially since I don't think I can get a new CDI
I am at a loss here

Test the circuits at the igniter, one wire goes from ignition switch, through kill switch, to coil positive and igniter (Kawasaki don't call it a CDI) so you need 12v from that wire with ignition on. Two wires come from trigger coil to igniter, they should produce small AC pulses when the engine is spun on the starter. One wire needs to be a good earth (negative) to igniter. One wire fires a 12v negative pulse from igniter to coil when engine is spun on starter. Not sure if there is an extra wire to igniter from neutral light on a KLF or not.

I'll see if I can figure that out.
Does anyone know if it is possible to buy one of the newer style ignitors and just change the connectors?
Or are they completely different?
I have the older style

OK here's a new one.
It always seamed that when I would walk away for about an hour or more, when I would come back and try to start it, it would fire for just a second and then die.
I just went and tested the spark plug after letting it sit.
I got great spark for about 2 seconds and then stop. No more sparking
What is going on there?

Sorry for the updates. Things change all the time.
So I game it some more time and bam it fired right up like nothing was wrong.
I ran it for about a minute and then shut it down.
Now it is doing what it was doing before. No spark no start

Try checking for a spark with the pull start. It seems quite like the "only fires when I take my finger off the start button", a common problem that nobody has the answer to. Is there an extra wire from igniter to neutral light wire? Have you checked all those wires to/from the igniter are working properly. I don't think the later igniter works, someone on here did an engine or stator swap between a model A and B and had endless problems, including the trigger coil, flywheel and igniter being incompatible if I remember correctly.

Yes I have that problem too. Take my finger off the start button and get a fire up for a half a second. I think its catching, but no
This quad does not have a pull start. Should it? Its an 86
What I have tested on the ignitor is this.
The two wires that come from the coil. One is yellow with red stripe. Other is green with white stripe.
With my test light, those 2 light up when key is on. The yellow stays lit when I am trying to start. The green goes off.
None of the other wires light up at any time.
