Congrats on your purchase, those Tecates are some mean machines. How does it run? I still kick myself when I was a newbie and had the chance to buy an 85 Tecate-3 for $100.00, but passed because the rear shock needed recharged.

So far it runs really good, the people before me that had took care of it and was the orginal owners. Some one stole it and busted the rear fender so I'm waiting for that to come in pretty soon. The only problem I have is with letting out the clutch and it acts like it wants to die. Heres the questions I had that I wrote to aske someone else

When I let the clutch lever out, it has to go almost all the way to normal position to get it going. Do I need to adjust this or this normal? Plus when I start to go it wants to bog down until I give it more gas. Do I need to rebuild the carb?

I couldnt tell you about the first question. But here's an answer for the second one. The tecate is a two-stroke and you need to get the revs up before you let out the clutch or it will die or bog down, you should keep some fingers on the clutch and feather it and get the revs up if it bogs to keep it in the powerband.

That power band kicked my butt the first day I brought it home. Short ver. Took off across the yard hauling butt front tire started coming up. BANG smacked a milk crate in the yard and I landed on my back, ripped my jeand and cracked the front fender.

Those two-strokes have a nasty hit when they get into the powerband, especially three-wheelers because off the front-end being so light. For the clutch question you should adjust the cable if it isnt going back to the original postition.

Back to the original postition is where the clutch kicks in. If I squeeze the clutch lever and let it go almost where the original postition is where the bike starts to move. Is that normal?

Mxracer98 Mar 11, 2002 09:48 AM

Ya its normal, but you can adjust it to let out sooner if you want.

I owned one exactly like that Chris! Very durable! Mine would spank a buds atc250r. Be very careful until you get the "feel" for the machine. It would be a good idea to at least clean the carb and run a compression check as well. Oh yea, Welcome!
