Pred 90
#1
I have decided after fighting with a piece of crap Kazuma for 6 months to dump it and get my son a Predator 90, and now I have a couple of questions.
1. how hard is it and what do I need to look for to put a headlight on this little machine?
2. Where are some good places for some hop up items? I looked at WRH but was looking for some others.
please don't try and tell me all the good things about the etons and kesea's and the rest I really have my mind made up and already owning 5 polaris machines that have never given me a lick of trouble I am gonna stick with them
Thanks
Chris

Chris,
Here's the info you requested...... (it's a cut / paste I put on another mini ATV Forum).
For my son's 2003 Pred-90 unit, I purchased a 12 Volt rotating switch and installed it where its Oil Injection "low oil" LED went. Its factory hole was a perfect fit. If wondering, we can run his unit for 10-12 hours (or 4 full tanks of gas) on 1 full Oil Injection tank. Since we usually go riding for a max. of 4 hours (after that, physical & emotional fatigue hits my son), there's little chance his Oil Injection tank would run dry. Our golden rule is: When you put gas in it, top up the Oil Injection tank.
The headlight we used is a black plastic automotive clear lens fog light. I bought a set of lights for $28.00. Then, I bought some 12v wiring, an inline fuse, and wired it directly back to its battery. By doing this, we can turn on/off his front light without requiring its ignition key to be on. I'm sure you could wire it into the factory ignition system, but I didn't want to screw around with its factory wiring.
Before you install a customized front light on your xx model, there's a few things you need to investigate. These items are:
- The unit's Strator system must support the wattage of light you use. For my son's '03 Pred-90 unit, I read his factory Strator outputs 70 watts at full throttle. Since he usually runs between 1/4-1/2 throttle, I needed a light less then 50 watts (or its battery would drain over time.) For us, the automative light set only came with 55 watt bulbs. I then went down to our local specialized lighting store, and purchased a 35 watt replacement bulb.
- There are many other 3rd party ATV type lights on the market. For the one that may be easily modified for your unit. For example, surf:

http://www.driving-lights.com/atv_light_kit.html
http://www.rickystator.com/pages/Lig...20systems.html
If I had to do it again (for my son's '03 Pred-90 unit), I'd recommend the oval light from http://www.driving-lights.com/atv_light_kit.html This light looks very nice, is a 35 watt system and comes with all the brackets, bolts and wiring. Might be worth investigating further...
Also, surf: http://www.lt80lightkit.com/Frontlightclose.html
This is same type of oval light that I installed on my son's Pred-90 unit. The only difference is, they installed it on the handle bars (possibly to a customized plate) and I installed the light on my son's Pred-90's front hood. Pros & cons to each. For example:
Being mounted on the handlebars, it may impact the flow and movement of its many cables / wires at the top of its steering shaft. High probability of blowing more bulbs because more vibration (that travels up the steering shaft) compared to the surface of its hood. However, when you turn a corner, the steering bar mounted light turns into the direction you are going, thus it lights up the corners much better.
On my son's unit, the light beam is pointed directly forward and doesn't light up the corners very well. Then again, my son shouldn't be speeding around corners at night anyway. If want to install the same customized light on your Pred-90, you may want to ensure you use an ATV classified light. For my son's unit, we used a clear lens automotive fog light, and its beam is too focused. Focused light a lighthouse beam trying to cut through thick fog. I'm sure ATV classified lights have more sideways viewing angle.
On snowmobiles & other ATVs, I've seen hood mounted & handle bar mounted lights. I'm NOT too sure which one is better in the long run....
WRH_Racing http://www.atv-kids.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv wrote me once stating that a front light assembly off an Xtreme 100 unit could also work. This is an ATV classified light and can bolt directly onto the handlebar assembly (or something light that). Well worth investigating this option further as well.
To increase safety visibility, I would recommend lights be installed on ALL trail & bush riding ATVs. If cars are made with daytime running lights, I feel ALL general purpose & trail riding quads should have front lights too.
If you want .jpg pictures of the customized light on our "Trail & Bush" Riding Ped-90, don't hesitate to PM me your internet email id. As they say, sometimes a picture is worth more then 1,000 words...
Hope this helps...

Chris,
Here are a few URLs from my mini-Quad archives. You may want to surf their sites and/or contact each place to confirm they have the "hop up" part you are looking for.
Note: For engine parts, I've been told one should stay with the same "bundle package". For example, select WRH Pipes with Engine mods with clutch modes, etc. Don't mix / match with over venders or their combined "optimized" tuned balance will be out of synch.

The brightness of light depends on: the reflection mirror angle at the back of the light, if its front lens is magnified, how clear its front lens is, and its wattage of bulb. A good "35-watt halogen bulb" works fine for us.
Where possible, try use an ATV Classified driving light. From my experience, lawn tractor lights tend to have too much sideways light spread (they are made for low speed travel things) and auto fog lights tend to have too much direct focus (made for high-speed auto travel). ATV Classified lights have a balance between these two extremes. For us, we've only gone night driving approx. 3 times and each ride was for no more then 20 minutes. Dusk to night hits very fast when one is inside a dark bush. For us, we use the front light for daytime running lights.

On my son's pred i got a 35 watt clear len driving lamp from Wal Mart "Cyber White-Naavigator NV-501W". i removed the center pod on the handle bars- moved the key switch to the side of tank. The lamp has the same color plastic as the bike and is mounted on the handle bar center mount. We ride alot at night on trails and very aggressive, puts out a good wide beam and hasn't pulled the battery down yet.
