I have a 2003 redcat and it wont start. The starter turns but it does not turn the engine over. I bought a new starter but it does the same thing . It worked fine my son was riding through mud I got it home and that was it. Its been sitting for about 5 months now now one in my area will work on it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Check your battery, all your connectors to make sure you have good contact, you could try bypassing the starter switch to see if it'll hot start to isolate whether or not the switch itself is bad. Hope this helps, I'll research the redcat a little more and let you know if i find anything else.

when you installed the new starter did you remove the side cover and reinstall the starter chain? their's a small chain that connects the starter to a gear, sounds to me thats not on

No I have not tried bypassing the switch. Good info. I'll try it.
Thanks |

Yes I pit the chain on. I'm actually wondering if it has something to do with that bottom gear.
Thanks for the info |

has nothing to do with the switch, you said the starter motor turns over , so if the chain connected then the only other thing it could be is the botton gear, if it was me i'd reremove the side cover then crank it over and see whats happening making sure the chain is moving while cranking, have you turn the motor over by itself?

Yes that was the next thing I was going to do . I Bypassed the solenoid I double checked the chain. There is a kill switch I'm not sure how to bypass that .
Thanks for the info. |

Dont exclude the kill switch because from experience this can be the cause and if it's not making good contact on the run side but that's just my two cents.

If the bike got wet, still cranks, but won't fire, it sounds like the left hand control. Under the front panel are two plugs that go to the handlebar control. Disconnect the smaller, three pin connector. Try starting.
Note: Above only works on 2004 and earlier models. |

am i missing something here? the stater rotates but doesn't turn the motor over right? if thats what i understand then it's not a electical problem, it's a mechanical problem somewhere between the starter motor and crankshaft. if the chain is still on the starter motor and the engine not seized then it's probably the starter idlelor gear.
