Default gearing change on lt 80

hey guys, we got a couple of 80s and both have a few mods, external only, we do a lot of riding at the dunes, in the summer and what I was wondering was about the gearing on the 80s. Top speed on the flats is more than enough for mom and I to witness. where I need a little help is on the hill climbes. We play follow the leader mostly and therefore we do a lot of sharp turns coming down the hills and head back up.I was thinking about changing the sprocket to get a little more power,by keeping the lt in the upper rrrs a little more hoping for a little more hill climbing power.top speed is not a issue since we ride as a family and try to keep the kids reeled in a little. Will the sprocket swap work like it does on the bigger bikes?or does the clutch on the lt 80 just not allow it to work like that. Any help would be appreciated or suggestions would be appreciated.

Removing 2 of the front clutch rollers may help.
Yes you can change the gearing to get more low. A bigger rear sprocket would be needed (prolly 3 teeth more).
Chain adjustment will be your next issue if changing the gearing.

Thanks for the replys The trouble is with more mods I am looking at twice the money because of the two bikes.I just bought a new z400 for my wife so funds are getting a little tight. My buddy removed some rollers from his so I will ask for some info. As to MR. LT 80,the mister because you deserve that kind of respect,Will shaving the head and having it ported help enough for what we want? If it is ported right would that move my powerband a little hopefully into the right spot for quick shots back up the hill. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!! Also what is a decent price for the head being shaved and the port job? just so I can go in a little bit informed.

Hey BALDY,

I changed over our sprockets to the 428 size sprockets.
Got a 26 rear and 12,13,14,15 fronts.
Go get ya some #40 chain, master links and a half link from the tractor store.
I can go count my links (cause I can't remember how many), and you can
make one chain that will fit the 12,13,14 fronts....... I believe.
I made a chain tensioner that works great.
I've found the 26/12 combo works good for bottom end.
Works great for us so far...........

Do you ever get into the Tacoma area?
If so, I know a great shop to shave your head (on the motor ) and port if you want.
It's a little pop shop that does great work, very reasonable.

I can also hook you up with the sprockets.
When I last talked to Sprocket Specialists, they were out of and were not going to order more steel sprockets.
But I have another supplier for ya if interested.

Good Luck
Good Luck

Baldy: Thanks.
I think a simple .030 off the head by a local shop and the 2 rollers removed will get you close.
Going into porting opens up a big can of worms and your wallet. I don't think your looking for that at this time.
A Trinity pipe may help you get a few more rrr's out of it for the quick uphill.
The 12/26 is the same as his 10/22. I'm thinking the pipe and the gearing change will accomplish what you want for now.
