I just found all of this today...
1.) My silencer has split at the seam. 2.) I noticed that my silencer has hit my brake caliper a few times and I'm thinking that is the cause of my silencer splitting. I don't really know what I should be asking here... I know the problems but what is your thought on all of this? I'm probably going to buy a HMF exhaust because I don't want that butt ugly square silencer. |
Dang, YoD! Those must have been some hardass landings! Sorry to hear about your silencer.
you were gonnna get an HMF anyway right? Does suck that now you HAVE to get a new one. I'm with you on that square thing. |
Actually this is not uncommon, my FX400 did the same thing. It split when your quad backfired once. You may not have remembered when this occured, but trust me, that's when it split apart. Cannondale is replacing the FMF silencer with a butt ugly square silencer now but you might as well go ahead and get an aftermarket one (HMF) and have your computer remapped. When I was in Honda of Tulsa the other day, they had another Cannibal that just split open his silencer.

<< Dang, YoD! Those must have been some hardass landings! >> I have said that I still had A LOT to learn as far as MX goes LOL. Yeah, I'm gonna have to work something out w/ my dad w/ my payments and all because I can barely afford the payments on my Dale, so it would take a while before I could get the HMF. I might end up being stuck w/ that "toaster" they call an exhaust (thats what Kyle from R&S said... I thought it was pretty funny calling that silencer a toaster). |
Weld it and ride. If it still jiggles try a bungy cored, lol hehe!

I put a dent in my silencer on the fx to from the caliper.I just started hearing about them splitting from backfiring.

We have had two since the beginning with the silender splitting and in both cases, it was caused by a backfire.
The silencer is made by FMF, but not to the same standards in construction as their "regular" silencers. All FMF silencers made for 4 stroke dirtbikes and ATV's have that seam welded from front to rear. On the Cannondales, it is "stamp locked" like a car or truck muffler. This may sound like a design flaw but actually what it does is prevent damage to the engine in case of a backfire. That's how other quads end up with warped exhaust valves. [I didn't get this from Cannondale, this is the reason automobiles have them on OEM exhaust systems] So whether they thought about that or not, I would much rather buy a 300.00 silencer before spending 1000.00 for a new top end |
I think the bigger question is:
Why are they backfiring? Any ideas? Smitty |
Well I'm gonna have to talk to my parents and see if they'll back me up for a new HMF exhaust... I'm only 16 so I still rely on them for a lot of stuff (not the dale though, I"m paying for every penny). If they can't (or won't) help me out, than I"m gonna weld that seam back up. Would that be a bad idea???

Cannondale will replace the blown out silencer if you can't cough up the $$ for an aftermarket silencer.
