If there are any cedar trees around the logs would last for years and years. One less thing to buy.

I've seen telephone posts used that were covered with creosote. I wouldn't go with regular pine or even hardwoods. Just end up with rotted supports and have to do it all over again.

Yup; that's true, but even pine would last a couple years, and can be covered in tar to slow the rot. And considering that there may be large enough trees on location at no additional cost to buy or transport it may be a better option.

Free is good if you don't mind doing it over again.
