Hey fellows a good idea is to buy you a cheap cellular phone off the net if you go riding by yourself or with friends. Most of the phones you can buy will let you dial 911 for free you don't know what a life saver this could be. Since I am a police officer I wouldn't hesitate to help a 4 wheeler in need...

And maybe an inexpensive GPS receiver. The ambualnces here and the med helo use it to navigate quicker in rural areas.

Thats another great idea Txdoc a little more expensive than the cell phone but nothing is to much when it comes to saving your life. Everybody is so cool around here where I work as a cop it wouldn't be any big deal if you called 911 to tell them to call someone if you were broke down. They are kinda catering to atv's with the big trail going in here...

Future cop here:) (Portland req.'s a bachelors degree and the math is a problem) I work as a cell phone reseller and GSM1900 phones (the ones with a sim card under the battery) will not call 911 if it is unhooked. Pick up an old analog phone (under $5.00 in many hock shops) because they have the best coverage and can always call 911 even if unhooked.
I just picked up a Globelstar phone (sattellight) so i get coverage anywhere on the planet:) also, I have had great luck with my $99.00 Eagle explorer 12 channel GPS as it gets a great lock even in heavy woods:) Joe |
So I can buy a cheap cell phone and call 911 even of I don't have a plan or service contract?
|
Yes, the telecom industry made a law that you can call 911 for free off any phone even unhooked cell phones anywhere in the US. The easiest one to use is the old analog "B" carrier as it goes to the roam plus service automatically and you can even make collect and credit card calls. Just try to call a number before you buy one..you should get a recorded message telling you the options
