400 ex engine in yamaha banshee frame
so i love the yamaha banshee the way it looks and stuff but dont really want all the power that comes with it. so what im thinking for my first quad i wanna put a 400ex engine which is more docile in the yamaha banshee. i know its not gonna be easy but thats what i wanna do. what do you guys think? im 17 120ibs 5'10. btw im new here

Stock Banshee is pretty mild. Why not just start there?
well you really think a stock banshee is good to start out for a beginner like me? i never had any other experience on any other quads, especially any 2 stroke. herd people say that its terrible for a beginner?
So my suggestion, buy a 300ex or 400ex. Very forgiving machines to learn how to ride, learn a clutch, etc. They can be had cheap and if you keep it maintained should be able to sell it for minimal or even no loss to get that Shee. No, I wouldn't recommend a banshee for a beginner, guess I missed that part. Honestly the banshee chassis isn't all that great, the motor is what everyone wants. I wouldn't put a 400 motor in that chassis, it is a downgrade from the 400 chassis. Now a banshee motor in a YFZ 450 frame, that is drool worthy( and there are some videos floating around of just such a thing.)

Ahhhh - the banshee had a long production run because it was a solid machine that could be modified to the moon...I'd have to agree with Scooter and just keep it stock and you'll be fine. 2 strokes generally have a "peaky" powerband, but the 2 cylinder banshee has a wider powerband (kinda like a smowmobile) thanks to it's 2nd cylinder...looking at dyno sheets it has a meaty torque curve making it easier to ride...
IMHO at least... |
ok DirtDevil101 now heres a question yamaha banshee or lt250r? which would you'd say is more beginner friendly stock wise?
I had a LT250R...great quad, but that motor is not as rider friendly as a 350 twin...also, and this it key, the Banshee has a 6 speed gearbox...I can't count the number of times I searched for another gear on my LT (it's a 5 speed)...
okay so i think ill get a stock banshee and use the throttle screw on it , till i get more confident with it. hows that sound? i even see and hear of older couples using banshees as their first quads. hell i can do it to right
this will be my first 350 two stroke twin quad. hope i dont end up blowing the motor
Well, it is a banshee, blowing them up os part of the fun, lol. I have owned a lot of 2 stroke quads and I would say an 85 or 86 lt250r is much friendlier for a beginner. The motor is derived from a trail bike and is pretty torquey. Honestly they are all pretty mellow stock. The Honda 250r is also a good place to start. The key being you need to respect the machine and also not buy a built one. A few months on one of those 4 strokes I mentioned is still a great idea.
