Hey binford,
On that gas tank idea, how did the PVC work?
I have a suggestion, though you may not like it. If you don't mind doing a little work and gettin' a little messy, make one with fiberglass. You can make pretty much anything you want to with fiberglass and it's actually pretty easy to work with.
Just a thought.

Yeah, same stuff. I have used it on my homemade duckboats and several other small projects and I believe that's the way I would go if I were you.
Of course, I would exhaust several other sources for a gas tank first. I like the lawnmower gas tank idea. There are many of those available in many shapes, sizes, and styles.
If you consider trying out the fiberglass, I can give you some tips.

You won't have to worry about the gasoline distroying the glue because the glue actually dissoles the PVC, so when you put too pieces together, it dries and is basically one piece.
You might have to worry about the gas melting the PVC, though.
And as for strength you can get the thicker PVC and it should hold up fine, that's what is used in some of the potato guns.

The idea of Jeg's is the best (www.jegs.com). Summit also has cells (www.summitracing.com). They make fuel cells as small a .5 gallon for those Junior Dragsters. Some come with foam to keep fuel from foaming. This would be the easiest because they probably also have mounting brackets.
Potato guns....he, he, he! What do you guys fuel yours with. We like a 50/50 mixture of Aqua net and spray starch. Also I have heard about rifled pipe available online but haven't found it.

Ive also used gas tanks from gas powered generators, some have the gas hose connection on the bottom, good for gravity feed system. Some have the hose connection on top which would work good with a fuel pump.
I,ve also put a bike motor on a go kart chassis its a GS450 Suzuki
it was a little tricky getting the chain drive and jack shaft setup to work right but what a ride its like driving a car but all the ways you can't drive a car to have fun with it.
Good luck, they,re a ton of fun when the ground is frozen and there is about a inch or two of snow, donut city.
Or the time I got out on a frozen smooth river, get up to about 50 miles an hour and whip it and its one donut after another until you get totally dizzy.

You can also get the spun aluminum tanks for around $80-$100. I think the 8"x24" is the 5 gallon and the 8x18 is 3.5. They come with a cap and two strap mounts that can be bolted to a flat surface. There is a 1/4" NPT bung on the bottom for screwing a fitting into. Here is a picture of one used on an FL350.
