Default awd engaging when switch is off

I just need some conformation on this one. After finishing up the plowing for the day I dropped back into 2wd just to play a bit. For no reason at one point the awd engaged violently for a brief second, thinking I had accidently hit the switch I checked and it was still in the off position and considered it a strange fluke. 10 minutes later it happens again. my money is on the roller cage finally giving out and a small piece is floating around causing it. I tested the awd repeatedly in a snow pile after that and everything seems fine again. Roller cage failing or something I haven't thought of???? this is on my 07 sp500 which I believe still had the plastic cage?

My money's on the roller cage. If it has even a small crack it can engage intermittently whether the awd switch is on or off. Had that happen a lot. If you tear into it I'd consider going to an aluminum roller cage.Sportsman 500 HO EFI Hardened Aluminum Sprague Cage Roller Carrier Differential | eBay

Thanks OPT. you've confirmed what I was thinking. definitely be going with the aluminum Sprague. Hopefully the 500 will get by till after winter. Don't run it much anymore since getting the new 15 850. Have no intentions of putting plow on the 850 anytime soon. The 500 is now the workhorse around my place.

Was there a change with the front diff during the 2006- 2007 production year. I called superatv about getting a new cage and they asked if my sportsman was built before or after 07/17/06. I would assume after, being how the 07's wouldn't be in production until mid to late summer of 06. will a vin check tell me?
