2002 325 trail boss not charging

Hi my wife's trail boss is not charging. I took my battery out of My bike and tried it but no difference in voltage at rpm it just drops a bit over time
I do not have a manual ( does anyone know where to down load one) so I don't know how to trouble shoot
Thanks
Rob

You might check to see if a voltage regulator wire may have come loose.Item#20 on the breakdown.Polaris ATV Parts 2002 A02CA32AA-AB TRAIL BOSS ELECTRICAL-TAILLIGHT Diagram You can do a general resistance test on the alternator wires leading to the regulator to rule out a stator problem. There should be some small resistance between each yellow wire with no yellow shorting to ground. If this checks out and only shows battery voltage or less when running, probably a faulty regulator. If you still want a manual here's a cheap one.2002 Polaris Trail Boss 325 Service Manual PDF Download

Thank you very much I will try this where are the wires to check? Sorry I don't know much about this stuff hopefully the manual shows me

The yellow stator wires that plug into the regulator. Just disconnect them and check ohms resistance between each yellow stator wire and also to ground. Should show a small resistance amount such as yellow to yellow/red 0.22 ohms.

Thank you so much I will try this later and get back to you on here

It seems to read 000 or 001 between and 100 to ground maybe I am doing it wrong it was on the diode setting. On the 200 ohms setting, touching the leads together read 0.2. Testing between the yellow wires read 0.5, 0.5 and 0.7

Sounds like the stator is ok. Regulators were the most common thing to fail on the charging system.

How can I test it do you know? This is quite a learning experience. If it does turn out to be the regulator where do you think I should buy one? Sorry for drawing on your expertise so much. And thank you for taking the time

The 5 buck manual I linked to can save you a lot of frustration. Has good charging system checks and tests to remove any doubt as to what is needed.

Great I will get it then thank you for all the help

Post this in the Honda section. Some good folks over there can help you..

Well I got the manual but the amp test doesn't,t work on this bike or a working twin

robs trailboss 05-18-2017 04:50 PM

Well the amp test from the manual did not work. I did the test on two exactly the same Ike's and neither gave the result
I took a good reg and put it on the bike did not help

Place the red lead in the 10 amp jack.
Turn the selector dial to the AC amps
Connect the meter leads to the Yellow
and Yellow/Red wires leading from
the alternator.
Start the engine and let it idle. Reading
should be a minimum of 7A at idle.

If you can't get this reading, you've replaced the regulator with a new or a known good regulator for this model and still doesn't charge, then sounds like you need a new stator. Stators aren't cheap for this model. Ricks or Ricky Stators have the best reputation.2002 Polaris Trail Boss 325 stator | eBay

That's exactly what it said in the manual, but when I read it here I noticed the AC I hand to buy a new meter both bike measured about 13.5 amps I put the reg from my bike on it and it's reg on my bike it worked on my bike . The next step is to measure the voltage at the red wire comping out of the regulator I disconnected it and measured the battery voltage at the harness side of the connection but I think I am supposed to leave it connected. I was wondering if I disconnect the red wire coming from the reg, start the bike could I get a regulated voltage coming out of the regulator. It seems that the stator and reg both work but It is not getting the voltage back to the battery. Thank you by the way for the help

Regulator has to have the red power wire connected for it to operate properly.
