1987 trail boss not charging ???

Default 1987 trail boss not charging ???

ok we it runs great now it wont charge.I did the ohm check and that is in the .45-.65 range the volt meter jumps all over from 1 volt to 10 or 12 this thing is driving me nuts what or where should i check for voltage

If it's charging, at idle you should have at least a little over 12 volts and it should jump up over 13 volts, to around 14.1 or so when you rev the engine up. If it's not charging, check for battery voltage at the voltage regulator, if you have battery voltage to it, the regulator is more than likely bad. If you have no battery voltage to the regulator, you have a blown fuse or a broken wire; trace the curcuit back towards the battery to see where you are losing power.

can i check volts from the stator ?

Just like John said,check voltage at the battery while it's running!Older models start charging about 14 volts off idle. If erratic readings,you can check the reg/rectifier connections,but if all are tight then most of the time you need to replace this module.Common problem,but if you have a manual or can get the stator resistance specs from the dealer, you can rule out the stator as the problem before you order a new reg/rectifier. OPT

It should look something like this and is usually mounted somewhere behind the front bumper.
