Just pull the valve cover and look at the cam opt

Back firing out of the carb is a sign of a bad exhaust cam lope. http://forum.highlifter.com/Pictures...-m4481484.aspx

Cam looks good took cover off not poping tthrew carb

If the cam lobe isn't worn, the valves are at .006 intake and exhaust,then pull the recoil cover off ,remove the flywheel nut and see if the slot in the flywheel is still lined up with the woodruff key on the crank shaft. If the key shears it can move the flywheel and alter timing.The 500 engines were the only ones I've seen do this,but camshafts were the biggest problem.
