Here is a pic of the machine when I first picked it up. It says r/es on the seat and when I google search 86 trail boss they all look exactly the same. I’ll check numbers on frame tomorrow and also pull the wire and see if it helps.

It's just the newer body style that I remember on the R/ES.https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/po.../body-assembly Possible that if you do have a W867527 or W867627 one of them could be the R/ES on the older body style. 1988 is when we started selling them,89 was when they really started getting into the second generation body styles. Didn't get in to many of the old body styles in for service,so anything's possible from Polaris up to that point..

Opt I just want to say thank you for all your feedback and quick responses. You’ve helped me out with I think every post I have put on here. So thank you!

As as far as my machine goes... I pulled head and there is no up and down play on the crank. I ordered the top end kit like you suggested as well as the carb kit. They should all be here Thursday. The motor is stamped 87 but couldn’t locate the tag on the frame. I see the vin but I’m just going to say it’s an 87 lol. Do you happen to know what the carb settings should be at when I put the new kit in? I ordered the one you said to get. Was only 12 bucks online.

'86, '87, and '88, will have G, H, or J as the 10th digit of the VIN. They don't use an I because it looks like a 1. There's no U because it looks too much like a V. And there's no O, Q, or 0, for obvious reasons. After using letters B through Y for 20 years, they go back to using numbers 1 through 9 and letter A again, and it keeps repeating. Mine is an 8 for 2008. You can tell by looking at my quad it's not a 1978, and they won't use 8 as a year code again until 2038.

Float arm should be parallel with the carb body after the new needle and seat are installed. Air screw screw setting starts at one turn out as the manual shows. When warm you can fine tune it.If boggy or rich, open the screw at 1/4 turn increments.Max should be 1.5-2 turns out. Be careful when you push the float pin out or you can break a post. Support the posts with your thumb if you use a pin punch. Here's a couple videos on this type carb that can help.

One thing that I noticed that was different about the carb on this machine is that there is an air hole on the side of where the choke plunger get screwed into the carb. Seems like a poor design that will allow water or dust into the carb

Look close as it may be blocked. If it's open then it's an atmospheric vent that needs a tube hooked to it and routed up. You can zip tie it to the choke or throttle cable.

Yeah it’s open. I’ll put a hose in it and run it up as suggested. Now that I’m thinking about it, how the heck do you torque the cylinder nuts back down? There is no room to get a socket on them. I took it off with a wrench.

A drop 14mm wrench is best to tighten/remove cylinder nuts.
