Default need electrical help

I have a 2006 ranger 500 4x4. I found out yesterday that when I turn my lights on it goes into 4 wheel drive. So I started probing wires. With all the switches turned off, and the key to the on position, I have a hot wire back to the taillights and I can hear the rear end solenoid click in whenever I turn the key off and on, is this the way it is suppose to be. If it is, what is the solenoid in the rearend doing. thanks
