I've had my 99 Sport for about 6 months now, I haven't ridden it alot, Snow in the winter months, and this spring I was away in school. I went out today, about 40 miles, when I got back I was washing the mud off. I discovered that one of my lug nuts had come off and another was very loose. when I first got the bike I checked them with just a socket wrench, but not with a torque wrench. Today I learned a lesson, check your bike! If I lost that wheel going 45-50 mph, I wouldn't be posting this now. If I sound like i'm an idiot, so be it, as long as you check your bike before you ride.

My buddies 97 Sport is famous for losing wheels. He can tighten the lugs on the wheels, and sure enuff, an hour later, he either loses a wheel, or the lugs are hand tight. My other buddy has a 400EX that has the same virus.

Thanks for the advice.
I don't have that problem but if I did, I would use rmoveable LocTite threadlocker (#262 Blue). By the sounds of it, this stuff might save a life. DJ |
Had this problem with a buddies go-kart when I was a kid. His old man fixed the problem by heating the nuts and flatten one side slightly. Torque wrench is pretty much useless after that. The wheels never came off again.

So why can't he keep his lugs tight??? if I had this problem I think I would add a locking nut to each nut or a pressure washer you know the ones that look like a broken ring...

I assume your talking about the guy with quad not keeping the nuts on the wheels. Actually it applys to both. Sometimes its the wrong size nut, fatigued bolt or nut, improper tightening sequence, or it could be from over torquing. Pretty vague, huh. It is always important to hand tighten first and then torque the nuts by going to the opposite side. Always recheck the torque after a ride or two. I have alot of experience with bolts and nuts after working for a gas production company assembling compressor plants...
