What's the difference between 2 and 4 stroke?

I am thoroughly familiar with a 4-stroke engine, seeing as how I have been in and out of my raptor. But, I just bought a super clean '98 400 sport and am wondering the differences in the mechanics. THANKS!!

they are two completely different hogs, about like comparing a gas to a diesel, but actually there is more of a difference between two and four strokes than between a gas and diesel. A two stroke fires at tdc on every revolution, unlike the four that fires at tdc on every other revolution. A 4 stroke has valves, a 2 uses a reed. There is no oil sump in a 2 for lubrication, the oil is mixed with the gas. In all reality a 2 stroke is much more simple than a 4, and can generally be made to get more horsepower than a 4 with smaller cc engines, up until recently that is. Go to http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke.htm and it may explain better.

IMO, its the difference between night and day, 2-stroke deing day There is much more quick power out of a 2-stroke. Not all 2-strokes have reeds either

No they don't all have reeds, I agree with you there, but I have to disagree with you on the night and day thing as the newer four strokes sure do give the two's a run for their money. Yes in the end, most two's with the same displacement will take a four, but I kind of like the smoothness a four has, course that may also be my years showing. I just sold a truck of mine that the muffler had fallen off of and I hated because it was too loud, whereas a decde or more ago I would have loved it.

Very good Rook, I always liked the Wankel, but it has been my experience that their power doesn't last as there is only one car that has ever been mass produced with it. Yes they perform very well, but never seem to last with their performance, yes they lat in running for the most part, but never last with their performance. How many older rx-7's do you see on the road today? wherea's how many older porches and the like do you see? Wankel had a great idea, but it was more of a disposeable engine, and unlike the 2 stroke which is so simple and easy to rebuild, the wankel, mainly in it's automotive application, is hard and time consuming. Yes it is a simple job, but you have to replace everything pretty much, wherea's the two stroke is simple and quick and CHEAP to rebuild. Great site though!!
