I bought my sp 500 in Canada (2000) and i live in Maine, My dealer-2 miles away- wants 6900.00 otd. In Canada I got it for 5300.00 No tax! The dealer here was pissed. I didnt let on who sold it to me, quite a few people are making the trip...
Thanx to NAFTA and Polaris for selling them to the canadian dealers 42% Cheaper! I didn't even dicker! Shame on me! All registered here in maine also!( I did pay the sales tax here on the 5300)
So local dealer in Maine, you are trying to sell tequila in texas! Remember...Location,location,location.. Im hard on them because they tried scare tactics to keep us from going across the border," you won't get them registered in Maine" " No warrantee" all B.S.
They actually thought that I would give them a copy of my warrantee and the name of the dealer to try to shut them down! Anything for a buck!

 

Why not reveal where you bought your Polaris to your local dealer? What could your local dealer do if you chose to buy your Polaris elsewhere? I understand you've done nothing illegal; I assume you incurred no duty bringing a US-made product back into the US (or paid it if you did).

Please clarify: Are US citizens required to declare and pay duty on goods purchased in Canada, even if the products were manufactured in the US, or did NAFTA remove all duty (some restrictions, I know, apply to liquor)? If duty applies, did you pay it? Finally, what could your local dealer do even if you revealed the name of the dealer in Canada where you purchased you Polaris?

Tree Farmer, There were no taxes or duty paid at the border or at the dealer, the dealer called me back after checking with their registration in New Brunswick and told me he wouldnt charge any taxes. If youre going to register the machine here in the states, youre going to pay a sales tax, Just keep track of howmuch it is that day in us currency, this is the amount you pay a 5.5% tax on (saving even more than if you pay 6500 here).
As far as the dealer goes......
Polaris U.S. is selling the machines to canadian dealers much cheaper than the us dealers , why? because their dollar is weaker and the cost would be double to the consumer,I paid $23,000 for a pick up here, could we buy that if it was 46,000? so the factory helps out to ease the cost.
So, we have dealers here just across the border from each other. I believe that the dealers in canada(near the border) have an agreement to not sell to a u.s. citizen. I know, what about Nafta? well it's one of those collusion things, unwritten maybe, and when a dealer does it, the ones here want to RAT on them, or scare them.
Alot of this information came directly from my hometown dealer...For what its worth
1. It's 100% legal
2. The dealers here will turn on you!
3. You can save a lot of cash
4. It's a long Drive
5. Ive sent alot of people there from around here, and they would all do it again. I would in a heart beat.
6. What about the warrantee, well 6 months is standard,the dealers are supposed to work on them. There is nothing, I mean nothing that designates a canadian machine from a us machine, except the paper work, no special serial number etc.

Thanks for the info, Y2KPolaris. Your story is consistent with accounts foreigners told me of other US goods available for much lower prices abroad.

I wonder whether prices differ from country to country in the European Common Market, where a common currency ("Eurodollar") exists? The Canadian/US exchange rate may be one factor causing the economically favorable climate for Canadian purchases, be it land (origin of this topic) or ATV's.

if polaris is selling there machines to canidian dealers much cheaper then the must have a big mark up for the US dealers. i know they wouldent sell them to the dealers at cost.
$5300 for a 2000 sp500 is a steal, i dont know if the dealers in US can buy it that cheap.
oh does the speedo have Kilometer or MPH?
