I've noticed on the '00 and later model Sp500's that the rear brake rotor has holes drilled in it for brake pad cleaning(I'm guessing). I'm thinking about taking my rear rotor off and drilling it myself. Anybody had any experience doing this? I'm thinking it would reduce brake squeal that I occasionally experience.

I've done this to the front and the rear, and let me tell you it's a job! Make sure you make a pattern and have a drill press.
The rotors are very very hard; I think I put in 50 holes per disc. First drilling the hole they going back with a bigger drill to counter sink both sides of each hole. I averaged 5 holes per drill bit. P.S.Get a comfortable chair too. |
Crossdrilling is done for both cleaning and cooling purposes.
As stated the rotors are very hard. It may be way easier and cheaper to head to the dealer and get a new style rotor. This assumes they are the same form fit and function. DJ |
Deej is right,If the rotors are $50 bucks or so it would be cheaper and alot easier to buy them.
They were not offered when I did mine, But considering the drill bits I went through and the time and the blisters, I would look into buying them first. I did it for the self cleaning of the rotor.I ride mud alot and needed new pads in less than a year. But I hear that alot from Polaris riders. I will tell you that I've got the same pads on since 1998 and they still look good! |
HPD sells rotors with the holes in them for $25 each. I'm gonna get them for my Sport, they say it keeps them cooler as well.

Are these rotors from HPD better than Polaris rotors ??? Do you have a website or # for HPD ???
