purpose of shims on the driven pulley on a 500 scrambler?

On my kawi 700 prairie I can remove the driven pulley shims to adjust belt tightness. Is this how you would also adjust the belt on a 500 4x4 scrambler? I found two shims, not sure of the thickness. The belt is 15 months old with average miles for that time of use. What should be the proper belt deflection for this 500? I removed the thinnest of the two shims and the belt now appears to ride up alittle higher on the driven pulley when I reinstalled it. Will that effect its performance? I could use your advise on the theory behind these shims. THANKS

You have to have at least 1 shim. The belt should ride about 1/8" above the driven clutch
