Default TLD PREDATOR 5th gear

MY question is this ,, everything ive heard and read has said that going from 4th to 5th gear the TLD PREDATOR basically falls on its face or boggs ,,, my question is this is there any mods that will cure this problem, such as a pipe .. jetting 1 less tooth on rear sprocket for more top end ,,,, I really want one but this 5th gear problem has me worried a little any help to clear this up would be gerat.. ps my brother has a stock yfz450 and i want to stay with him on trails as well as on open roads

Default TLD PREDATOR 5th gear

I bought an '03 a year and a half ago and thought it was geared too tall for the power. I ended up going down a tooth in the front and it fixed the problem. But I did eventually get the LTE exhaust and a new cdi which only helped and was able to go back to the stock gearing. I go to the dunes and have raced raptors and the yzf450's and for the most part the winner is whomever gets the start. They're all good machines and all hang well together.

I gear to where I'm running out of power at the rev-limiter in 5th gear. But I do still go down a tooth in the front when I go to the dunes. Mainly because it allows me to use another gear for the hills.

Pipe it and you're good to go. Hope it helps.

I’m not sure what Polaris was thinking when they decided to change the gear ratios on the 05 Predator TDL. I much prefer the more evenly spaced gearing on the 05 Standard. With evenly spaced gearing it’s easy to adjust for different conditions by changing sprockets. There is no easy fix for the “big gap” between 4th and 5th on the 05 TLD. I would have liked to have the suspension on the TLD however, chose the 05 STD Predator because it didn’t have the screwy gearing of the TLD.

One of the big questions I have to ask is this though.......

How often do you REALLY use 5th gear? Especially if your trail riding? If your pegging 5th while trail riding you've got bigger ones than I do. I think the real question is how does the rest of the tranny suit your needs? I'm by no means a slouch/slow poke, and I've only gotten my pred into 5th a hand full of times, and it was never while mx or xc riding. Only going down roads in W.Va. while connecting trails.

I'm sure if you get an aftermarket pipe and give it some more power it should be able to pull 5th, but I think you will use 5th so rarely that it will not be an issue. I personally would still get a TLD, just because I'm interested in the suspension. I think for the trail rider/mx racer 5th gear would be not even a concern. For desert racers........that my be another story.

I looked in a TLD owners manual at the dealer, if the numbers are accurate it's not a big difference between the two. The ratios listed for the standard vs the TLD for 4th and 5th are;

4th gear: St. 1.1 TLD 1.2
5th gear .9 .9

So the gap is not all it's made out to be, I have a hard time believing it doesn't pull 5th gear well.

Also both have 38t rear sprockets vs the 37 on previous models.......

Depends on who you ask lol. I believe laws limit the top speed to 75 stock on all quads sold new.
Low 70's is common..
