02 SP500 H.O. 300 MILES THE ONLY THING REPLACED IS TWO BELTS, PROBALLY DUE TO RIDER.

 

carppenter, You must not ride much! )2 with under 500 miles. Man the first week I had mine I put 200 miles on !!!!

reverse limiter recently went out so I by-passed it. other than that; no probs at all

still rides like a Caddy!

I have all of you beat. I had almost 4,200 miles on my 00 SP335 when I traded it in for the 500. Their engines are one of the strongest parts on polaris atvs'. That is a bunch of crap about the engines never lasting more than 2,000 miles. One of my old friends has a 96 Magnum 425 and it has several thousand miles on it, and the engine still runs fine. My 02 SP500 has 2,000+ miles on it. I beat on that engine of the 335 and I never had a problem with it( I would go WOT for long periods of time). Just change the oil, adjust the valves, and do other misc. stuff and your engine will last a long time. If I can remember correctly I replaced 8 u joints(this was a weakness on this machine), the steering tie rods, 1 belt, and brake pads for all 4 tires. Overall, I felt the little SP had pretty good reliability. If you are eating belts quickly you are not using low gear when you should be. Another good tip for polaris atvs' is to make sure you grease the zerks often.

 

I change the oil @ every 250 miles and grease the fitting. I clean the air filter. I have never adjusted the valves though. Can someone tell exactly how to do that? Is this something a dealer should do or can anyone do it?

I had a 2001 sp500 with over 3600 miles on it but traded it on a new one Oct. 2004, but I have a freind that had a 99 500 magnum and sold it tosome one with over 9000 miles on it with the oe belt . He has sence bought a new machine in 2001 and traded every year sence he retired and he puts around 1800 miles a year on.



98sp500 with 1100 miles of pushing cars around replaced 4 belts norm services
02sp500ho with 1400 miles norn services and 1 cv boot
05 sp700efi 150 miles with problems, take off and top end speed

 

I've put 900 miles on my 700 and it now has 2400 onit and have never had a problem. Also have had my explorer for about 6 months , no problems.

 

I know a farmer with an 01 Magnum with over 12,000 miles!! He has to replace the belt every 1000 miles and it looks like hell ... i don't think he's ever washed it off, other then when he drives it in the rain. LOL

 

2004.5 400 Sportsman, 1000 miles, 5 rear CV boots and the plug wire shorted out, fixed under recall

2002, 2001 Xplorer 4x4 (250) No odometers, but driven literally every day of the past three summers all day long. Zero problems with those.
