clutch creep and EBS..I'm getting my a#@ whipped!
 

I have a 2002 500 ho with EBS. I have been having a creeping problem and it has got so bad now that I can’t even shift it without turning off the engine.

I removed the drive cover and found the belt to be tight or very little deflection and upon closer look that the belt seemed tight to the engine side of the drive clutch. After removing the belt and seeing that the drive clutch shaft has grooves and the belt wasn’t riding in them, I put the belt back on and positioned it in the middle of the drive clutch (in the grooves) and started it up and it didn’t creep at idle at all even after a little acceleration it stopped and didn’t creep. But when I gave it a good dose of throttle and let off it would not disengage and would creep.
It seems that after the drive clutch closes it drives the belt tight to the engine and the grooves won’t let it get back to where it should ride.

I looked at the belt and found it to be pushed tight against the engine side and not down in the grooves. If I push down and move the belt in the grooves it will work again.

So I tried shimming it out and that didn’t work and I then checked alignment and center to center, they are fine.

I then thought I could shim the driven clutch sheaves apart but after taking it apart and reading I see that can’t be done. I am thinking that there may be something in the Hilliard system causing it to creep.

I checked all springs they are good
I checked buttons and ramps good

I have a lot of experience with snowmobile clutches but the grooves in the drive and not shimming the secondary have me wondering what to do!

I have had the same problem with my sp and then I was riding it and belt fliped it self over and a 5inch peice of metal came outta my belt cover and it ruined my cover , now it seems to work fine !

You may have worn parts in the primary clutch and/or the clutch alignment is off causing the belt to grab.

i had the same problem with creeping and the shim idea would only be a temporary fix, my solution was to buy a new primary clutch and that is what i did and my problem has been eliminated. pb500

I think you guys are right about the primary being the problem, and that the shims are a temporary fix.

My question is what exactly goes wrong to cause this………….buying a complete new clutch seems extreme, after all this machine has only a thousand miles!

Couldn’t I buy just the parts I need and replace them.

It may also be a big posibility that the primary spring is weak and not pushing the clutch back open. You checked the primary buttons? Also the clutch weights can stick. Take the weights off and clean the bolts that go through the center of the weights.

I think the thrust washers wear out on either side of the 1way hillard clutch that the belt rides on (EBS) If the washers are worn through and into the clutch sheaves you may need a clutch or more than one replacement thrust washer to fill the gap. Unless you know someone that could tell you what it needs you might be wise to pop the clutches off and take them to a good dealer for inspection and have them show you what it needs.....
