Yes you need to hold it in while in reverse.

What it is is a safty feature to keep you or someone else from going to fast in reverse. Also you must hold the override button in while you are in reverse using the AWD or you AWD will not work.

If you don't like holding it in there is a mod kit to use a toggle switch instead of the yellow button. Just do a search on ebay they are really cheap.
