Default 300 explorer good machine?

I dont know how many miles or what year it is, but i know the engine was just rebuilt, but I have a chance to buy a 300 explorer 4x4 for about $500. were there many problems with these or no? The chain came off the front sprocket and jammed the front axle when the guy was riding it after the engine rebuild, his buddy pulled it home and there it sat for like 3 years. I'm thinking about buying it for the woman cuz she can't shift a gearbox if her life depended on it. I know it will need work, but want to know how well the engines hold up in these, being 2-stroke and all.

I would, My 250 4x4 had the same chain issue, I had to square up the front carrier weld it back in and all is good. Mine was pretty tore up, time and patience, and now I just ride, plow, and even have pulled an eliminator pulling sled. 500 you bet.
