2 stroke grunt (anyone?)
#1
Was just wondering if anyone could explain to me why the Polaris 250cc 2 stroke motor operates without reeds. Its actually messing with me because I can't understand why it performs as well as it does without them. Has anyone ever welded a reed cage to a 250cc block? I remember my old 250cc KDX and it used reeds, but did not have the powerband that the KX had. Am I confused? I was (am) under the impression that it is the dual staged reed that triggers the awesome powerband of mx type 2 stroke motors.
Even my old Mercury outboard had dual stage reeds (it was 1300cc, inline 6, 100hp @ 4600rpm) Please skool me.

Its a piston ported motor. Currently, Skidoo's 380 fan is also piston ported. But you're right.. the high performance motors have reed valves. Other two strokes have used rotary valves like the older skidoos and more recently, seadoo 580,650,720 motors and really far back, early 70s Kawasaki street bikes.

Many people have reed cages welded to the stock jug and it makes a night and day difference. There are a few here that have this. HPD has a kit, azbadboyz has one. Not sure if Rick ritter does these. Most will use a cage from a banshee. Look at it this way. It is an oversized chainsaw motor. Most 2 strokes dont have reeds untill you get to bigger cc's.
