How to test radiator fan on 99 Sportsman 500

Hello, just wondered what the best way to test if my fan is working. I was plowing snow last night and anitfreeze started to come out the overflow bottle. The fan and the temp. light did not come on though. Maybe it never got "too hot" but I just want to be sure it's working properly.
I pulled off the cover in front of the headlight and could see the wires coming from the fan. I could also see a temp sensor in the radiator and also one in the side of the motor.
I know I can easily send 12v directly to the fan and see if it spins but after that I'm not so sure where to go. I just ordered a factory service manual yesterday. I guess I'm just a little impatient...

Thanks, Jon

To check the temp sensor that goes into the radiator, disconnect the spade terminals from the temp sensor on the radiator. Take an Ohm meter and test the resistance of the sensor across the two terminals. You should read "OL" or you should at least have a resistance somewhere in the Meg Ohms. Once the sensor senses the coolant is getting hot, the sensor will short out and allow current to flow to the fan.

To check the fan, disconnect the connector by the fan and take a resistance reading on the two terminals. You should get a short.

To check the temp sensor on the engine (I believe this sensor only turns on the hot light when the engine is hot), disconnect the connector going to the sensor. Hold one lead of the ohm meter on any chassi or engine ground and the other lead on the temp sensor wire. You should get "OL" or somewhere in the meg ohms.
