1998 magnum 425 reverse noise
 

I have a 1998 425 magnum that will make a clunking noise when I'm in reverse and let off the gas. It does not make that noise if I hold on the brake before letting off the gas. Only happens in reverse and only when I let off the gas. Any ideas of what the problem is would be greatly appreciated. Sounds like a disk brake rattle or somewhere in the middle of the machine down low. I can't find it. thanks

Sounds like what my scrammy was doin for a while then it got worse, in reverse under load felt and sounded like the rear chain was skipping. I wasn't turns out theres 2 chains in the trans, one for forward and one for reverse. the one for revese is splash lubed and with low water in the trans (apparently no oil) the chain will stretch and skip but parts are cheap but plan for a couple hours to re & re the trans, Might not be the same prob but a possibilty

sounds like the reverse chain for sure... it'll eventually hop off the sprocket (this is not a roller chain, more like a timing chain). I would suggest replacing both chains and any worn bearings while u are in there.

My friends that is not charging is doin the same thing as described here, but when I called the dealer for him the dealer told me there is only 1 chain in there and the price he gave me was stupidly high. I am going to call a different dealer and ask them. The first 1 told me that is not likely the prob cuz they are a large dealer n have never even heard of this problem. Is it possible they are right??? Even tho I doubt it! You guys have done this repair n know first hand, so I think yous are right.

The older 425 trans only has ONE chain. It works reverse.

As it starts to wear it will make a noise in reverse and later it will start to slip.

The chain will wear out fairly quickly is you run the older crap Polaris sells in the trans and you are the type to hold the overide butten and give it hell in reverse all the time.

They seldom give trouble when filled with good synthetic motor oil and no abuse.

It has been a while since I replaced one but if I remember correctly the chain costs about $60.

It takes about three hours to replace it IF you know exactly what you are doing.
