I'm a bit unclear about your description.

A) When you run it.....does it then overheat??? How do you know this??? Does the "HOT" flash in the display??? By "shut down" do you mean the engine dies by itself???

B)Have you checked all of the obvious cooling system stuff???.....mud in the radiator fins....low coolant level.....air-bound.

C) The fan cycles on/off all the time on these machine as part of normal operation. However, if you are getting the "HOT" sign flashing in the instrument display then yes it is running hot for some reason. Check the things above if you haven't already.

the cooling fan comes on and off as normal but after a hour of or so of running the engine becomes unresponsive to throttle and stalls out it will not restart for an hour or so it will then start and run normally for awhile and do the same thing. the hot never flashes on the display

the engine dies on its own. HOT does not flash on the display. It seems to run fine for about an hour, it then becomes unresponsive to throttle and stalls out it will not restart for 1/2 to 1 hour and will then run fine again for awhile. the cooling fan comes on and off as normal during run time.

That sounds like a fuel feeding problem to me. Check all your fuel lines. Make sure there are not any kinks/obstuctions. Make sure your gas tank vent is isn't pinched.

That's my best guess.

way out here, i agree, also check your firing, its one or other,it's not any thing to do with your motor getting hot, first check what backinthesaddle said and if that don't fix it,you are lossing fire somewhere, somehow; wayout,out........................ p.s. get you a bottle of gas dry,it might be water in your gas, also be sure to check your carb,it could be something blocking airways, you know gum, sluge or something, a buddy of mine his done the same thing, they took the carb apart and it was full of junk, like jelly he said, good luck.........
