Default Desperately need help with Sport 400 oil change!

I need to change the oil on my 1998 Sport 400, both the engine oil and the counterbalance oil.

I don?t have an owner?s manual.

Could someone please tell me how much engine oil and counterbalance oil to use?

Any hints or experiences to share with changing these oils? I don?t even know where to start!

Also, I read it is safe to use synthetic 10w-30 oil in place of Polaris Counterbalance oil. Is this true?

Thanks!

You don't change the engine oil in a sport 400, it doesn't have any oil to change. The counterbalance oil is changed by taking a 10mm head bolt out from under the engine on the the right side area. No, its not on the pull rope cover. You add oil at the back right and at the very bottom of the engine. You will see a dipstick that screws in. Use 30 wieght oil.

I mean i could be totaly wrong hear but on my 125 and 250 2 stoke bikes there is no motor oil exept for the oil you mix with the gas and the tranny oil. I would think that would apply to the 400 polaris motor also since its 2 stroke and is oil injected. I have a 400 scrambler 400 4x4 and so far i just have been putting the 2 stroke polaris oil in the tank and then the system mixes it with the gas. There may be oil in some parts of the motor but i realy don't think so. I just picked up my service manual tuesday it was 60 bucks and worth every penny, filled with great information.

first off it's a 2 stroke, no engine oil in the engine.

The counterbalancer drain plug is on the front of the engine & the dipstick/fill hole is under the airbox. Most guys take the airbox off to refill, makes the job alot easier.

So, what types of oil should I use and how much of each?

caper, if it has a counterbalancer its going to be a 2 stroke sport as none of the sprtsman are 2 stroke or have c.balancers. hope this helps.

I think they made a two-stroke sportsman in the mid-ninetys.
