flooding out

A friend's sportsman 400 seems to flood out sometimes when going up hills . It starts to smoke & loose power as in the engine loading up with so much gas that it (the engine) can't burn. When he lets off the throttle for a few min. & gives it throttle again it seems to do ok. This doesn't always happen so, it's hard to figure out. Any ideas on a cure ?

thanks for any replys

HELP !!!! ENGINE FLOODING OUT

Sounds like a dirty carb, it only take's a grain of dirt or sand moving around in the carb to foul the inlet valve causing float neddle to stick ! Remove and take apart carb an clean it . You may need to remove gas tank and drain old fuel ! I've gotten ,dirt, trash and water straight from the pump ;that's why i pump fuel in gas container with strainer spout. If this is the case you really should add a clear fuel filter between the tank and carburator ! And replace the old fuel line with premium tygon hose it's better than the black plastic and rubber fuel line ! You can get the tygon fuel line and clear filter at any small engine repair shop, the line and clear fuel filter will cost less than at the quad dealer. Also get some seafoam at O'reallys, auto zone or advance auto part's, it's only $4.99 at O'reallys where i live in north west ga. ; maybe more in your local . The seafoam is great stuff it's a fuel cleaner/stabilzer this stuff will clean the intire fuel system and also the combustion chamber ! .................williebee
