1997 Xplorer 500 won't start
Hi everyone. New to the board. I have a 1997 Polaris Xplorer 500 that will not start. I road it a couple of weeks ago and then put it in the garage. I went to ride it this past weekend and it wouldn't start. The starter runs and I can hear the engine turning over; but it won't fire. Everyone once in a while it will actually try to fire; but only for a second. I have replaced the plug and checked the air filter. I got a couple of loud back fires when trying to get it to start. Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to check. Oh, the tank was empty when I first tried; but I filled it up and no luck. I have released the drain on the carb and it is definitely getting fuel.
Thanks, |

I have the same problem with my 2004.5 Sportsman 500 HO. What was your eventual resolve?

Replaced Stator.

So did you have any other symptoms, ie it was not charging? No spark?

It was not sparking correctly when I tested the plugs. I tried several plugs and tested the cdi box; but this did not solve the issue. Finally took it to the dealer to have them test it and they said that the stator was bad. They also said that it was unusual for the stator to go bad; but that it did occur occasionally.

BS I work at a dealer and pretty much all the time it's the stator, but that's pretty much with all the brands that I see that.

what gives more trouble the stator or the cdi box?

I'd bet stator 10 to 1
