Won't go into reverse

Have a 2001 325 magnum 2X4. Trans won't shift into reverse or pops out if you get it to catch. Forward works fine. Took linkage off and shifted direct on trans, won't go in just grinds. Pulled trans and took off cover and pulled gear set. Can't see any thing wrong. Nothing worn or bent and broke. Anyone have this problem before? Thanks, TORK.

There is this little aluminum linkage that conects the shifting rod to the trans that uhsally bends.

Took linkage off and shifted at trans shift shaft. Still would not go into gear. If I slammed it hard I could get to hook up once or twice. Inside it looks like the gear set that the chain runs on can slide back on the shaft. I am wondering if itis enough to not allow gears to engage solid and pop out. I installed a snapring behind gear to hold it in place and am going to reassemble and try it.

My 2001 sportsman 500 dose it sometimes but not to your extent. I ushally just put it in low gear and then slam it back into revers.

the gears move back, so is that like a worn out bearing then?

No, there is no retainer to hold them over in place. Don't understand why it would take this long to show up but that is all I could see wrong. Will get it back in Monday morning and give it a try and see if it works.

That snap ring you put on is ussually the problem.I bet the old one was broke and fell into the bottom of the case and you just didnt notice it when you split them. You may have to add a thin washer to take up some slack between the snapring and the gear. Also check the inside of the gear for wear .And be sure the shift forks dont have ANY wear marks on them.

the grooves on the input shaft where that snap ring rides wears out and the snap ring will walk between the gear and I believe a washer. I rebuilt a 97 400 4x4 with only fwd, neu, and reverse gear and when disassembled found the snap ring floating on the shaft, which when you selected reverse the rev gear paws would engage or not depended upon position of the drive gear. Good luck

Got it back together and everything worked great. ftwflh, the snap ring I put on is not in the parts breakdown but that was what held gear in place allowing reverse to work. Guess I improved on design HA HA. Thanks for the input from you guys, TORK
