I went with Mobil 1 for the oil. For the gearcase, I just used the Polaris brand. It doesn't take that much to drain and fill it, and it's not something you're going to do as often as a routine oil change.

The Polaris oil would be worth paying extra for IF it was better than aftermarket oil but in reality it is NOT. In fact it is not as good as some synthetic oil you can buy for $4 to $6 a qt.

The vast majority of name brand synthetic oil is better than the Polaris oil and also cheaper. The Polaris oil is OK if you change it more often than they reccomend. Still why use it when better oil can be had cheaper?

Their gearcase oil is OK but it is still way overpriced. A good name brand synthetic motor oil works great in the gearcase also.

I use and reccomend Castrol Syntec 5w50 but Moblie One Amsoil or any good synthetic oil will be as good or better.

The only Polaris fluid you need to buy is their front diff. oil for the newer 4X4's.

I think you stated the main reason right there. Polaris will know they will sell a lot more oil if they list a required oil weight that you can not get very easily except at the dealership. I agree with the others. A good quality name brand synthetic is going to be just as good as or better than Polaris oil.

Why does some of the Hawkeye egines say 0W40 and some 0W50?

I own a 2006 Hawkeye and just recently was shocked at the price of oil. The Hawkeye says (on mine) 0W50 synthetic. I live in Arizona and decided to buy Mobil1 Synthetic 15W50 at Walmart for about $5 a qt. I have already broke in my engine with the Polaris stuff and as long as you maintain the proper viscosity for your area of the country I'd consider looking around.
I also changed the transmission/rearend oil. I bought a qt of Polaris AGL for this at over $10 a qt. Next change will be 80/90 weight gear oil instead.
I change oil regularely as well as my oil filter.

Anyone else want to chime in here.

I find it interesting that Polaris is recommending such a thick oil for that machine. I use the mobile 0w-40 in my 500HO and think that any base3 oe base4 oil should be fine for most climates. The 50w is the high temp protection and seems excessive but it may have to do with the high reving engine. The 0w is why mine starts at sub freezing temps. I would tend to agree that the Polaris oil is not a high quality oil but does anyone know who is the manufacturer? In my bomba i use the rotella 5w40 syn and have been impressed.

The Hawkeye is air/oil cooled which usually runs a bit warmer.
