What's the 9 volt battery connector for?

When I removed the headlight pod from my '08 800 Sportsman to install the switch for the work light kit, I noticed a 9 volt battery connector cable tied to the harness. I'm curios, what's it for? I've attached a couple pictures.

Howdy aht_six.....this may be for memory retention of programmed electronic info other than the default info when the main battery is disconnected. A 9 volt battery is connected to this before you would pull the main battery. Just a guess.

Man, I've been wondering the exact same thing since I pulled the pod apart on my 08 800 as well. I'm guessing he's right..

So what your saying is................Without that 9 volt in place and the battery is removed...........................programed info will be lost?..........The speedo will not lose any memory is have a back-up built in for hopefully the lifetime of the quad...........This must be for other engine and E.F.I. stored information and tuning settings.........Correct?...............Caper..... ............

that would seem really stupid to have to do when you disconnect your battery. It should say in the manual if you did that. Disconnecting your battery would be considered a normal practice for some when storing for the winter. And what a bad place to put it if thats what its for. Is that on the 800's only? I didnt see anthiing under my 450 pod

Somewhere, someone in this world must know what it's for. I tried hooking up a 9V battery, almost expecting some lights somewhere to start flashing or it to start talking or something, but nope, it just sat there looking mean and cool...

I thought the dealer had a modular type plug-in(which I have under mine..I think..LOL..).......This 9 volt type is not on my Sportsman 450.......So they don't hook mine up to any scanner??......Is the 9 volt type just for EFI models maybe??..........Caper.................

Thanks for all the responces.

I e-mailed my question to an engineer friend of mine at Polaris R & D.

This was his response, "The 9V connector is to power the ECU when the main battery is disconnected. The ECU needs to be energized when the machine is connected to our service tool. They may use it for troubleshooting and checking version of software after final test at Roseau. The machines aren't supposed to have the battery installed until at sale."
