Won't idle
I have a 2004.5 carburated 700 with K&N filter, Pure Polaris pipe. Jetted at purchase for my altitude (7000+ ft). Upgraded to 800 primary clutch and Team Roller secondary. The only service has been regular fluid changes. Recently I replaced the plugs and fuel filter (near fuel pump).
If I don't touch the throttle it starts and idles fine at half choke. (Cold climate, temps in teens). Once I touch the throttle it won't idle. I can ride for hours and it won't idle once the throttle has been engaged. It seems like it's going to idle fine as I let off the throttle but once I let out the last 1/16th inch (it's already down to idle speed) it dies as if a kill switch has been tripped. This applies to any choke setting. The choke does not seem to be sticking. It does seem to run too rich (by smell). I disengage the choke ASAP as it warms up. When I cleaned the air filter there was oil in the air cleaner housing (1/4" deep puddle). Where to go from here? |
Won't idle
could the etc not be adjusted correctly? If your throttle does not have the correct free play it could do as you have described

Won't idle
That looks to be it. I adjusted the cable and it cleared right up.
What is the ETC? |
Won't idle
eletronic throttle control. its a safety devise that stops the enigne if the throttle is stuck wide open. there should be about 1/8" free play in the throttle.

Won't idle
Thanks. Mine seemed to have less than that. I adjusted it, the problem went away and it's back to running great. I appreciate the input. Heading out to play in the snow! Wohooo

Won't idle
glad you got it fixed up, that could get aggravating ever time you let off the gas it dies.

Won't idle
Man, you're not kidding. Especially when plowing snow. I let of the gas about every 5 seconds....
