Default 97 SPORTSMAN 500 SHIFT PROBLEMS

How do I fix a problem of trying to shift into reverse or high? The quad does not have trouble shifting into low but reverse and high are a problem.
Thanks,
Jim

Just wont lock into reverse, If the idle is to high it rattles a lot and it just cant seem to sync with the gear groove if that makes sense.

your idle is to high then you should lower it that might be your prob on teh carb there is a lil screw with a black not at the bottom screw that out to lower your idle and in to rais your idle that should help.

ok, i know this is off topic but quick Q... does the polaris automatic transmission have different gears like in a car, or just one gear like on a regular bike?

well in teh trans it is just a set of gears on one shaft and other gears on another when you move the shift lever it puts it into that gear low high nutral revers. after you are in tehat gear nothing else shifts or moves besides teh belt torqe converter clutch. witch gives you the torqe at the bottom end and speed at the top without any gaps from shifting just a smoth pull. from 0 up 2 70mph on some models. i had my trans apart not because there was a prob with it but because i snapped the chain and put a hole in the case in my 1998 sport 400l 2/4 that one only has forward nutral and reverse so it is simpler. it all looked good inside i did replace a bearing but it didn't need it but i did it because i had it apart and i found it for $9 on the iternet when polaris whanted around $30 i havn't taken anything else with low aprat yet i think they have 3 shafts unlike mine was 2.

you need to adjust your linkages, put it in neutral, and take the slack out of the linkage rods, you might as well, adjust them both. there just like tie rods on the front end.

Thanks, this sounds like the right answer but I am not familiar with this adjustment. Is there their a site that I can go to that will explain this in detail?
THANKS,
Jim
